| FBI Probes Austin Mass Shooting for Possible Terrorism After Two Killed and 14 Injured |
Authorities are looking into whether or not the shooting that occurred at Buford's Backyard Beer Garden, a popular bar in Austin, may be an act of terrorism in light of the recent tensions in geopolitical areas around the world. The incident resulted in two innocent victims being shot and killed, and 14 total victims being shot and injured, before the responding officers shot and killed the shooter according to law enforcement officials.
Witnesses described the scene (which is in close proximity to the University of Texas) two blocks from the University of Texas as being very chaotic as patrons began to depart from the bar at around 2 a.m. to either go home, or continue their celebration at another event. Law enforcement officials indicated the suspect shot victims from both a vehicle and on foot.

The suspect has been identified as 53 year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen, originally from Senegal, who had previously lived in New York and Texas, according to information provided by law enforcement officials to reporters.
Investigators also have recovered a Koran from the shooter's vehicle, along with other clothing that has some religious/political significance, and clothing described as having Iranian references. That information has caused investigators to look closely at an ideologically based motive behind the shooting, especially with all the ongoing tensions between the United States, its allies, and Middle Eastern countries.
Authorities indicated that there is still not enough information on how the shooting suspect was motivated. They have stated that the investigation into the suspect's motive is ongoing with the assistance from the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Experts warn against assuming that finding religious or geopolitical symbolism in a violent crime scene indicates the perpetrator had a political/religious motivation as motives can be very complex and varied even when there are symbolism items present.

According to police, prior to opening fire, the shooter drove around the block several times before parking his vehicle outside of Buford's and firing on patrons with a hand gun. He then exited the vehicle and continued to fire at individuals on the street according to police reports.
